Coach Cano – dedicated surfer and good vibe machine
Meet Coach Cano, your surf class instructor and business owner! Cano was born and raised right here on the southeast coast of Puerto Rico. HeĀ has been surfing all over the island for 27 years, and more recently, all over the world. He’s competed and won multiple competitions, but surfs simply for the love of the sport almost every day on his home breaks here on the south coast. You can also find him participating in many local cleanup efforts around the island as a steward of the marine environment.
While Cano can teach you any type and any level of surfing in Spanish or English, he specializes in classic-style surfing and longboarding (and teaching his 4 year old daughter how to surf!). Cano also specializes and has experience with adaptive surfing coaching for members of our ocean family with impairments such as paraparesis/paraplegia, amputations, or cerebral palsy as well as children with autism. Don’t let age, size, or perceived athletic ability keep you from exploring your love of the ocean – give him a call today!
Coach Cano is certified by the International Surfing Association (ISA) as a surf coach, adaptive surf coach (for those with disabilities), and a surf competition judge. He also has CPR and First Aid certifications. Your safety is most important to allow you to fully enjoy discovering your personal flow in the waves with us! Let’s get out there!
Coach Maggie – waterwoman and big Ocean nerd
Meet Maggie, your backup surf class coach and Cano’s other half! Maggie has lived all over the world but almost always on a beach or on an island (except for that brief stint in Vegas). She grew up swimming, diving, kayaking, sailing, fishing, and surfing, among other things, and is stoked to share all the knowledge she’s gained from ocean life. Not only is Maggie an assistant surf coach to Cano, she will also be your guide should you choose to take polespearing lessons to catch and eat invasive lionfish, or if you want to go on one of our local hikes to beautiful waterfalls and rivers. She’s also the photographer for most surf classes and will send you photos after your class!
Outside of the fun stuff, Maggie used to own a bunch of emergency/specialty vet practices, she’s an EMT (therefore CPR and First Aid certified), and a first responder to natural disasters all over the world as a Search and Rescue team member. She serves on the Board of Directors at Reef Relief in Key West (where she called home before Puerto Rico) and is super-active in beach cleanups and local coral conservation and restoration. She also is a volunteer with SBP Puerto Rico (rebuilding destroyed homes after hurricanes) and with Puerto Rico Flight Angels (flying abandoned puppies on commercial flights from San Juan to the United States every month). Don’t be afraid to ask her about volunteer opportunities on the island – there are many available!
